Two men worshipping a box containing the EverQuest expansion Scars of Velious. It was the most popular mmorpg when this photo was taken- the year 2000.

check out Minions of Mirth, the only mmo I’m aware of that had both a dedicated scream hotkey and a catastrophic hard drive failure that resulted in the total corruption of the official servers (you can still play offline though)

I genuinely recommend doing a singleplayer run (there’s an official multibox mechanic, so you can play it as a party based rpg) if you enjoy the uncanny feeling of dead mmos

here’s an entire mmo where you’re the only living person and everything is really scary

also I’d be remiss to recommend Minions of Mirth in 2023 without also mentioning that while the game does have a manual, you’re better off using this fansite

final note: it turns out there’s actually a private server that’s trying to continue development? I hadn’t heard of it until now, but they’ve got a discord server up (cannot vouch for or against it, but if you want multiplayer, that’s your best bet)
